The Rescue of Vulnerable Mums & Their Babies
5th Jun 2023In the last few months, we have been caring for 32 desperate dogs from one situation, and giving them the care they deserve.
We were contacted in March, when the freezing temperatures had been consistently challenging us all, to help many, many dogs existing in conditions that were simply unthinkable for dog-lovers.
Multiple organisations attended the shocking scene, and our team took as many as they knew we could house safely in our facilities. Having seen that life for these sweet dogs involved scarce water and food, and no shelter from the harsh elements, we knew that we had reached them at a critical time.
Once we transported the 25 dogs back to our facilities, we were able to start assessing the needs of the 7 adult females and 18 puppies, and focus our immediate attentions on those who needed the most urgent care.
Sinks were filled with warm water and staff & volunteers started to work their way through the weak, tiny puppies, to remove the urine and faeces that stained and caked on their delicate fur. Mums were assessed to see which puppies were likely to belong to them, and we did our best to match them and check that no pup was being left behind.
A belly of good food and access to clean water seemed to ease the anxiety for them and enabled them to transition into this new environment. They soon started to settle in their heated bedrooms, which our caring team had made so cosy, with lots of beds and blankets to snuggle into.
Next, came the veterinary consultations, and we were relieved to learn that, in spite of all that they had endured, their health was better than could have been expected. We also learnt that one of the adult females – who we had named Cassie - was likely to be pregnant.
Over time, we got to know these precious poppets, and their beautiful personalities began to shine through. There is simply nothing better than seeing an animal go from worried and shut down, to seeking out play and interaction.
A few weeks passed and then, late one night, the signs were clear… Cassie was in labour. Our experienced and dedicated team stayed with her through the night to ensure she could bring her 7 sweet babies safely into the world.
Cassie and her puppies
Cassie and her, now, 6-week-old babies are doing amazingly well. She has been the most special mummy, and has made sure that her pups’ needs always come first.
We are thrilled to have made a big difference to the lives and futures of these deserving dogs, and even happier that some have now met their forever families and have embarked upon wonderful new life journeys.
All of this has huge cost implications for us
Responding to dreadful circumstances like this used to be much rarer in our region, but we are starting to see more urgent welfare needs than ever before. Providing veterinary treatment and around the clock care for 32 vulnerable dogs, with no notice, rapidly uses up our resources and reserves. The veterinary costs, alone, for these dogs are in excess of £6,000.
We are appealing to our amazing, animal-loving followers to make sure we can drop everything and react urgently again for the next situation that heads our way. We have no way of knowing when that will be.
